Former executive and VP of Canada and Bermuda for Louis Vuitton, Joon Ma, was recently accused of stealing trade secrets and deleting files before jumping on board with one of the high-end designer’s competitors, Coach.
Ma, who worked at Louis Vuitton since 2008, violated a breach of contract, specifically disobeying a noncompete clause which stated she must not accept work with a competitor of Louis Vuitton for six months following resignation. Furthermore, Ma took information regarding Louis Vuitton’s operations with her to a similar and newly created position just for her at Coach.
The accused allegedly copied files from her work laptop before leaving Louis Vuitton and accessed a presentation that took place after she left the company. She then deleted a series of files and emails in an effort to hide her tracks.
As reported by Law360, Louis Vuitton stated, “LVNA’s confidential and proprietary information and trade secrets are critical and significant assets of its business and not available to the public. The highly sensitive strategic information alone would provide a competitor like Coach with LVNA’s client and marketing playbook for all of 2014.”
Louis Vuitton is asking Ma to return the stolen confidential information and to stop working for Coach for six months, as per the noncompete clause in her work contract.
